26/12/2019 – Guinness PRO14 Communications – Scotland star Bennett pens new deal with Edinburgh Rugby

Edinburgh Rugby have been handed a huge boost ahead of this Saturday’s 1872 Cup second leg at BT Murrayfield with the re-signing of Scotland international centre, Mark Bennett.

Bennett, 26, pens a new deal after enjoying a terrific start to the 2019/20 campaign which has seen the Olympic medallist score five tries in 10 appearances so far this season.

The centre becomes the third player to re-sign today as he follows Luke Crosbie and Lewis Carmichael in committing his future to the club.

On putting pen-to-paper on a new deal, Bennett, said: “The club is going in the right direction and it’s something that I’ve really bought into during my spell at Edinburgh.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here in the city and it’s been brilliant being able to find my feet in the backline this season. I’m looking forward to pulling on the jersey and representing this club in the years to come.”

Head Coach Richard Cockerill, added: “Mark is a proven internationalist who has performed really well to start this season.

“He’s quick and decisive and looks to be back to his best. We’re really happy that he’s re-signed with the club and he’ll be an important player for us in the seasons to come.”

Capped 22-times for Scotland, Bennett joined Edinburgh Rugby in the summer of 2017 following an impressive period in the heart of Glasgow Warriors’ midfield.

The centre missed the first half of the 2017/18 campaign through injury, but returned with a bang as he scored a dramatic winning try - his first for the club - in the 29-24 victory over Leinster in February 2018.

The centre was back to his explosive self to begin the 2018/19 season, but injury struck once again as he suffered a hamstring tear against Ulster in only the second match of the campaign.

Bennett worked tirelessly to return to full fitness however, and finished in the starting line-up for the final seven fixtures of the campaign.

The centre has started the current season in sparkling form – grabbing an opening day hat-trick against Zebre in round one – while the internationalist followed it up with a match winning score away to Cardiff Blues the following weekend.

Bennett started at outside-centre in last weekend’s 1872 Cup opener at Scotstoun and is set to once again feature as Edinburgh face Glasgow Warriors at BT Murrayfield in the second leg this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
