England men will face USA in the ninth place play-off at the Cape Town Sevens on Sunday (KO 14.54pm, live on Sky Sports Action).
They began the weekend with a narrow 24-26 loss to Scotland, Femi Sofolarin crossed on the right wing in the last play of the match.
England then recorded an impressive 33-7 win over Spain to kick off the second day, before they ended the pool matches with a 33-12 defeat to France.
Tom Bowen opened the scoring in the first minute against Spain while tries from Dan Norton and Will Edwards, originally named as 13th man but drafted in following an injury to Will Muir, put England firmly in control.
Juan Ramos reduced the deficit early in the second half before Ollie Lindsay-Hague and Harry Glover sealed the spoils.
The pool ended with a loss to France.
Skipper Phil Burgess touched down England’s opener but their lead was short lived as Jean-Pascal Barraque levelled the scores.
Pierre-Gilles Lakafia put France ahead before the impressive Barraque crossed either side of Remi Siega’s try late on. Lindsay-Hague grabbed his third try in as many matches as consolation.
